Govt considering 2nd nuclear plant in Bangladesh: PM

The Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina today stated that the government will construct a second nuclear power plant to satisfy the growing demand of electric power.

"Today is a very important day for us. The day is not only important for Bangladesh but also for me as well," she declared while inaugurating the pressure vessel installation process at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) through a videoconference from the home at the Gono Bhaban residence in Dhaka this morning, as per the BSS report.

"Bangladesh has entered the nuclear world," she declared.

Hasina declared that the government took the decision to build another nuclear power station upon the completion that of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

"We're searching for a suitable location within the south region...It's difficult to locate hard soil in the region, but we're looking at numerous islands and various locations to locate a suitable one...My option is on the opposite shore of the Padma river. ...," UNB said.

In announcing that the government is conducting surveys to choose an appropriate location she added "If the government can build another nuclear power plant in the country, there'll be no problem in power supply."

The prime minister stated that the government had set a goal of turning this country to a developed country by 2041.

In 2071, as the prime minister declared that the nation will mark 100th anniversary of independence. "That will surely be celebrated by the new generation in a beautiful, developed, prosperous and modern technology knowledge-based country," she said.

Russian and Bangladeshi experts set up the reactor pressure vessel that was brought to the site of the project from Russia in October, 2020.

The plant would comprise two power units that have capacities at 1,200MW.

Technology and Technology Minister Yeafesh Osman was the chief guest at the event. the state-run Russian atomic energy company Rosatom's director general Alexey Likhachev spoke as the special guest on behalf of Rosatom's RNPP location.

The Science and Technology Secretary, Ziaul Hasan gave the welcoming address , while the Plant Director Dr. Mohammad Shawkat Akbar, joined the ceremony in the nuclear reactor. A video presentation about Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was shown. Rooppur Nuclear Power Station was screened during the ceremony.

the Project Director Shaukat Akbar has told The Daily Star yesterday, "Installation of reactor pressure vessel is one of the major tasks for using nuclear energy to generate electricity. Nuclear fuel (uranium) from reactor pressure vessel is used to generate electricity."

The reactor is now installed within the main section of the power reactor in Rooppur in Pabna The country's desire to develop nuclear energy will become a reality.

The development of the nuclear power industry can not only solve the energy shortage issue in Bangladesh but help in the growth of the region and improve the standard of living of the people.

It is believed that the Rooppur Project is currently being carried out in collaboration with the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, that is being built with the financial and technical assistance of Russia.
